Are you interested in the Christmas traditions of different countries?

The holiday comes with the first winter decoration, which appeared in the interior, and ends with the last Christmas tree ball. But in each of the countries, New Year’s decoration is different from another – there are traditions and rules.

In Great Britain, houses are decorated with branches of fir and mistletoe. The first symbolizes wealth, the second – hospitality and fertility. Traditionally, the British put the felt socks over the fires, where children find presents from Santa Claus.

Americans stop their choice on tall trees and place them in the most open spaces so all family members can freely admire the main symbol of the holiday. The Christmas tree is decorated mainly with monochromatic balls. In the interior – a lot of garlands.

In India, a mango or banana tree is decorated for the Christmas time. And houses are decorated with mango leaves. Clay oil lamps are placed on the walls and edges of flat roofs.

Austrians are fans of handmade greeting cards and prefer not only to give them for Christmas and the New Year’s Eve, but also to hang them under the ceiling, decorating their dwelling.

In Denmark, instead of a Christmas tree, people decorate larch, and among the traditional elements of decor are: fir branches, cones, wreaths and stars from a dry vine. Natural materials and white color prevail everywhere.

Analogous to the Christmas tree in China is the Tree of Light – trees hung with lanterns, flowers and garlands. At the entrance are obligatory branches of flowering peach, which is believed to deter evil spirits. Above the door, the Chinese hang five paper strips, which symbolize five kinds of happiness: luck, honor, longevity, wealth and joy.

The Christmas table in Germany must be covered with a snow-white tablecloth, decorated with fir branches, scented candles. Mandatory delicacy on the Christmas table should be sweet cookies and marzipan candy.

In the Czech Republic, Christmas and New Year eve are equally actively celebrating. The Czech New Year’s table is original. Meat is a symbol of prosperity and wealth. As a hot serve carp baked in sour cream. This is a centuries-old tradition. And for dessert – a chocolate cake (“Praha”) with champagne.

In Russia people used to celebrate New Year’s Eve with family and close friends. The table is full of different dishes, the main pots are: Russian salad (Olivie), sparkling wine and meat. In the decoration are colorful lights and a big Christmas tree, under which the presents are.

Christmas and New Year holidays in France are a real riot of culinary delights and fantasies. On the festive table, the famous French champagne, vegetables, fruits, green salad, smoked salmon and, of course, “foie gras” (the famous goose liver pate). Baked turkey with lingonberries is served as a hot dish, and then oysters are the national pride of the French.

In Ireland, the evening before the New Year’s Eve, everyone opens the doors of their homes. Anyone who wishes can enter and will be a welcome guest. He will be treated and presented with a glass of wine with the words: “For peace in this house and in the whole world!”

On New Year’s Eve in Italy, old unnecessary things are flying out of the windows. Italians celebrate the New Year holiday in a new interior and in new clothes.



In Spain, the main holiday is Christmas. The whole family meets that day at a rich table. On the Christmas table are rolls, muffins and cakes. The main dessert for the New Year’s eve is chocolate “Tio de nadal”. Aragon and Catalan Christmas tradition. Previously, it was a wooden log, which was burned in the houses and which gave the inhabitants light and heat, the most important feeling of the holiday. The New Year’s Eve is the evening that the Spanish people celebrate with family and friends. In Spain, they give preference to angel figurines: so that next year the house would be under reliable protection, and troubles and misfortunes would not knock on it.
